New Goodwood partnership for Midhurst dog assistance charity

Goodwood has announced a two-year partnership with Heyshott-based charity Canine Partners.

The charity, which trains assistance dogs for disabled people, was chosen by Goodwood staff as their charity for 2019 and 2020 and will benefit from fundraising at Goodwood events as well as providing volunteering opportunities for all Goodwood employees.

The Duke of Richmond said: “Our aim is to help transform the lives of as many people as possible by supporting the breeding and training of these remarkable assistance dogs.”

In addition to internal fund-raising efforts, Goodwood aims to raise money at events open to all its members, as well as to the public.

“We are very excited about this fantastic opportunity to raise awareness and generate vital funds,” said Jackie Staunton, chairman of trustees for Canine Partners.

Nicola Hopkins, assisted by canine partner Flora, added: “This will be fundamental in helping to transform lives like mine. An assistance dog changes your life in ways you don’t ever expect or imagine. Flora has been key to me regaining my independence – not just opening doors literally but also metaphorically, giving me confidence to live my life to the full.”

Crawley Town 1 Macclesfield Town 1 - Reds gain home draw against relegation strugglers

Crawley Town came from behind to earn a home draw against relegation battlers Macclesfield Town.

The Silkmen took the lead just before half-time through Harry Smith's 40th minute headed goal.

Crawley had a penalty appeal turned down early in the second half in an incident during which Willock was booked for simulation.

Reds worked hard during the second half and looked the only team likely to score and got their rewards when Lewis Young equalised with a deflected shot with six minutes to go.

Winger Willock made his first first start for Reds since joining on the last day of the January transfer window on loan from Manchester United.

Crawley made two chances to the side which drew 0-0 at Northampton Town last Saturday with Willock and Josh Payne coming into the team in place of Filipe Morais was not in the squad and Panutche Camara was on the bench.

Dannie Bulman wore the captain's armband.Reds' owner Ziya Eren was present at the game while former Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur star Sol Campbell appeared at the People's Pension Stadium as manager of the Silkmen.

A win for the visitors who are currently second from bottom could lift them out of the bottom two.

The new boy looked promising from the start and launched a powerful shot straight at 'keeper Kieran O'Hara inside the first 40 seconds after kick-off.

Bulman then crossed the loose ball to Ollie Palmer who headed over the bar.

Macclesfield went close to opening the scoring in the sixth minute when a move involving Harry Smith and Scott Wilson ended with Reece Cole heading against the post.

Willock looked threatening again when a few minutes later he struck a second shot set-up by Dominic Poleon which forced O'Hara to make another save.

Macclesfield pressurised as the half wengt on as Smith forced Morris into action, then Cole lifted shot out of the ground from outside the area.

Smith gave the visitors the lead five minutes before half-time when he headed Koby Arthur's cross across the goal and into the net.

Just before half-time Reds' David Sesay hit a fierce shot just wide from the edge of the area but it was not enough from Crawley during the first half.

In the second half Poleon crossed for Palmer to have a go but he headed over the bar.

Bulman also shot but could not get past O'Hara as Reds struggled to make good possession count with goal threats.

Reds' fans thought their team had earned a penalty kick ten minutes into the second half when Willock went down in the area but instead of pointing to the spot the referee reached for a yellow card and booked him for diving.

Gabriele Cioffi made three chances in the second half with Ashley Nathaniel-George replacing Josh Payne, Camara coming on for Willock and Reece Grego-Cox coming off the bench for Poleon.

Crawley Town: Morris, Young, Payne, McNerney, Palmer, Poleon, Francomb, Sesay, Dallison, Willock, Bulman (capt)

Crawley Town 1 Macclesfield Town 1: Player ratings

A late, deflected Lewis Young strike earned Crawley a point against relegation threatened Macclesfield Town at the People's Pension Stadium this afternoon. Here's how the players fared.

Morris 6: Rarely troubled in a game of few chances but he couldn't have done anything to stop Macclesfield's opener.

Francomb 6: Almost created the opener with an excellent cross which landed straight onto the head of Palmer and didn't do too much wrong defensively.

McNerney 6: Untroubled for 90 per cent of the game, but one lack of concentration cost a goal.

Dallison 6: Similar to McNerney. Wasn't required to do much defending but couldn't stop opener.

Young 7: Worked hard and looked a threat on the right hand side. Made the difference with vital equaliser, thanks to a heavy deflection.

Willock 7: Promising display from the Manchester United loanee who was the best player for the hosts. Confident on the ball and looks to be a tricky player. Didn't see as much of the ball in the second half but his substitution came as a surprise with 20 minutes to go.

Bulman 6: Standard assured yet unspectacular performance from the veteran.

Payne 4: Struggled to make an impact and was substituted for Ashley Nathaniel-George after an hour.

Sesay 6: Bright performance and looks an exciting talent. Was on the receiving end of several crunching tackles.

Poleon 4: Worked hard but was largely ineffective. Subbed for Reece Grego-Cox for last 15 minutes.

Palmer 5: Tried to make things happen. Two good opportunities in the first half but couldn't keeper his headers down. Got on the end of a cross yet again early in the second half but again it sailed over the bar.

Subs

Ashley Nathaniel-George 6: Reds looked more of a threat after his introduction but squandered two good opportunities to set up the winner. Massively over-hit a cross when he had several players in the box to aim at.

Panutche Camara 6: Added injection of pace and energy to team looking short of ideas.

Reece Grego-Cox 5: Not a huge amount of time to make an impact but a slightly lighter weighted through ball could have seen Camara in to score a very late winner.

Substitute Ajiboye nets double to fire Worthing into play-off places

Substitute David Ajiboye marked his return from injury with a double as Worthing completed a comeback Bostik League Premier Division win at struggling Wingate & Finchley to move back into the play-off positions.

Former Brighton forward Ajiboye, who has missed the club's previous three matches with a knock, struck twice in the final 24 minutes after replacing Alex Parsons to fire Adam Hinshelwood's men to a 2-1 triumph at the Maurice Rebak Stadium.

Irnti Rapai had fired the hosts ahead just after the hour but Ajiboye's brace ensured Worthing took all three points, moving up two places to fourth and extending their unbeaten run to five matches.

Hinshelwood kept the same starting side from last week's hammering of Harlow Town, although Alfie Young, Joel Colbran and Ajiboye were fit again and were all named on the bench.

For all of Worthing's possession in the first half there was no way through and it was goalless at the interval.

It was Wingate who broke the deadlock on 63 minutes, going ahead courtesy of Rapai's goal.

Ajiboye replaced Parsons immediately after the equaliser and would have a huge impact.

The former Brighton striker levelled things up on 66 minutes to set up a thrilling final 20 minutes or so.

Ajiboye completed his double and the turnaround seven minutes from time as Worthing climbed to fourth.

WORTHING: Perntreou; Edwards, Jones, Crane; Parsons, Clarke, Aguiar, Newton; Poku, Starkey; Pearce. Subs: Colbran (Edwards, 24), Ajiboye (Parsons, 63), Young (Newton, 84), Kealy, Budd.

Crawley Town boss praises Manchester United loan signing Matty Willock after fight back against Macclesfield Town

$

Crawley Town manager Gabriele Cioffi believed his side earned a valuable draw against 'a tough team.'

Reds went behind in the 40th minute through a headed goal by Macclesfield's Harry Smith.
They had an appeal for a penalty turned down before eventually fighting back through Lewis Young's individual goal with just six minutes to go.

Cioffi praised both Young and new signing Matty Willock following his home debut.
He said: "That was a good point. We played well against a tough team.
"We stepped on to the pitch with the right mentality.
"The attitude of the 14 players on the pitch - this was the fruit of a united mentality and something the club has to be proud.
"What we worked on during the week bore fruit during the first half. Then we suffered a silly goal."
Cioffi praised scorer Young for his contribution and the defence as whole.
He said: "I am very happy with his performance as I am with David Sesay, not forgetting we have two good defenders on the bench.
"Yes they can do more because I want them closer to support the strikers.
Cioffi was pleased with new signing Matty Willock's display during his first start since joining on loan from Manchester United.
He said: "I wanted Willock - he was my first choice when the January transfer window opened.
"I picked him from two or three names Selim (Gaygusuz) gave me, I was sure and we were able to sign him before the end of the window.
"I think he had a good performance, he brought physicality, tackling, finishing and has added value and competition to our squad.
"I took him off because he asked me to because he had cramp.
"Today he had three or four shots on goal, so I am thinking it's the right blood in the changing room and will push on the other younger players showing them the work of a professional player, bringing up the energy and the competition."

Bognor hurt by Haringey hammering ... late winner lifts Chichester City NINE points clear

It was a bad day for Bognor in the Bostik premier promotion race as they went down to a 4-0 defeat at home to second-placed Haringey.

The reverse sees them drop out of the play-off zone and down to seventh ahead of next Saturday's big West Sussex derby at home to Worthing, who are up into the top four after a 2-1 win at Wingate 7 Finchley.

It was only 1-0 at the break after Kudus Oyenuga's goal but the North Londoners took full control after the interval and strikes from Joel Nouble (2) and Karl Akinwande condemned Bognor to their largest home league defeat in a long time.

In the Southern Combination premier, Chichester City are now NINE points clear at the top after Ryan Peake scored the only goal of the game at home to AFC Uckfield Town in the third added-on minute. That coupled with news that closest rivals Newhaven had lost again - 2-1 at Loxwood - made it a day to savour at Oaklands Park.

Also celebrating were Pagham, who put recent poor form behind them to beat Lingfield 2-1 at Nyetimber Lane. Howard Neighbour and Harry Prisk were their scorers.

In division one, Selsey lost 1-0 at home to AFC Varndeanians, Sidlesham went down 2-0 at home to Bexhill and Midhurst were 2-1 losers at home to Southwick, with Gary Norgate on target.

In division two Bosham lost 3-1 at home to Copthorne.

Former Arsenal and Tottenham star wants his side 'to be almost like Crawley Town'

$

Former Tottenham and Arsenal star Sol Campbell said his Macclesfield team should be more solid like Crawley Town'.

The two sides fought out a 1-1 draw after Lewis Young's 84th minute equaliser cancelled out a first half lead gained by Harry Smith.

In December the ex-England captain oversaw a 2-0 win against Reds in his first game in charge of the Silkmen.

He said: "I think Crawley started really well as a team - they put a lot of pressure on us and they switched the ball.

"That was a big part of their game and we nullified that or at least got close to the guys switching the ball.

"At the end we came unstuck and backed off too much and the guy (Lewis Young) got the deflection and scored.

"Generally they are a solid team. The league doesn't lie - and we've got to be almost like them, we've got to be even more solid and get up the league.

"We've come up from such a low position but we've climbed but have not got through.

"They've had a fantastic season, they've some really good players: some good young players as well.

"They've played really well at home. On the wings they're really mobile guys which causes problems and are overall pretty solid all over the pitch.

"Crawley probably feel it was a completely different game from when they played us before as we are very much fitter."

Campbell felt Macclesfield have to be more ruthless in making sure of all three points.

He said: "Second half they pushed and tried to look for the equaliser but the main thing for me last third play wasn't really up to standard.

"With the amount of time we had on the ball we kept on picking the wrong options.

"For us know by hook or by crook we've got to see these games out and extend our lead.

"We've had good opportunities to extend our lead and we didn't do it.

"We've got to really look at ourselves to make sure we pick the right shot or right cross to give us the best chance to score a goal.

"With the time and space we had I was really disappointed with the use of ball in the final third."

Cisse and Aneke on target as MK maintain promotion challenge

Milton Keynes Dons claimed their third straight win in Sky Bet League Two to maintain their challenge for automatic promotion.

Paul Tisdale’s men beat Newport County 2-0 at Stadium MK, their second win over the South Wales side in little over a fortnight, and they stay in fourth place in the table, two points off the top three.

Dons could even afford to miss a penalty, with Kieran Agard’s first-half effort being saved by Joe Day, before second half goals from Ousseynou Cisse and Chuks Aneke sealed the win.

MK went close inside 16 minutes when Dean Lewington - making his 700th career appearance - found Agard on the edge of the Newport box but his first-time shot fizzed inches wide.

Referee Sebastian Stockbridge then pointed to the penalty spot after the hosts’ Conor McGrandles was felled inside the box under Dan Butler’s clumsy challenge - only for Newport goalkeeper Day to save Agard’s tame spot-kick.

It was goalless at half-time, and Dons had to wait until the 57th minute before taking the lead, and it came through an unlikely source.

Cisse arrived at the right time, and when McGrandles’ cross found the Mali international unmarked inside the County box he emphatically headed home only his second goal od the season.

MK then dominated possession, but they were never able to relax as they had to wait until the 89th minute before sealing the win and the points.

Aneke was the man to settle everybody’s nerves, collecting a flick on from Agard and driving into the areabefore firing home his 16th goal of the campaign.

‘Robust and committed’ MK Dons delight boss Tisdale

Milton Keynes Dons boss Paul Tisdale was delighted with his team’s ‘robust and committed performance’ in their 2-0 win over Newport County on Saturday.

Second half goals from Ousseynou Cisse and Chuks Aneke secured a hard-fought win for Dons against County, and the result sees Dons stay in fourth place in Sky Bet League Two, just two points off the top three.

Newport had their moments in an entertaining game at Stadium MK, but Dons, who also saw Kieran Agard miss a first-half penalty, were worthy winners, and Tisdale was a very happy man.

Cisse’s goal 12 minutes after the break gave MK the lead before Aneke’s 16th goal of the season in the final minute of the game secured the points, and Tisdale said: “At 1-0 it is never over, and we were really trying to get that second goal.

“It wasn’t a case of us sitting on that 1-0 lead, and we tried our very best to put more pressure on them, and eventually we got that second goal.

“I think it was a really good game against a team who went for us.

“As you would expect, they changed things when it was 1-0 and really tried to put us under pressure, but it was a really tough, robust and committed performance, and I am delighted we won.

“We are developing, and I have just congratulated the team on the manner of the performance.

“There is a 2-0 win and there is a 2-0 win, and that was a result, performance and scoreline that performance that pleases the manager.”

Dons claiming the maximum was all the more important as the top three of LincolnCity, Bury and Mansfield Town all secured wins, but Tisdale isn’t thinking too far ahead.

“We have a dozen more games, there is a good quarter of the season still to go, and there is a lot of football to be played,” said the Dons boss.

“We have to concentrate on the next game, and although it is an old cliche, it happens to be true.”

MK are back in action next Saturday when they host Crawley Town at Stadium MK.

'My brother Ashley will try to tell me my deflected goal doesn't count': Lewis Young after earning Crawley a point against Macclesfield

$

Crawley defender Lewis Young joked that his late equaliser against Macclesfield 'won't count' in the eyes of brother and Manchester United star Ashley Young.

Lewis Young earned Crawley a point in an uninspiring game this afternoon, with a deflected 84th minute strike cancelling out Harry Smith's first half header.

He said: "I'm not too fussed about personal accolades. We played some good stuff out there today and created some good chances. Thankfully in the end we got a goal and a point.

"My family have said I've got to score a few more. My wife, my mum and dad and definitely my little boy. He's always on to me about scoring. Me and my brother Ashley have got a competition going. I beat him last year but he's got two goals this season and I've got one. I've got another 11 cup finals to try and get more goals.

"I'll be expecting a text or a phone call on the way home about my goal. He'll try and tell me it doesn't count. We're competitive but that's the edge we need to push us on. Him along with the rest of the family.

"We are always looking at our goal position. Last year I won 3-2 but he's 2-1 up at the minute. I'll be trying to beat him by the end of the season."

Young said Reds were left frustrated not to come away with three points against Macclesfield, but will 'take the point and move on'.

He added: It's a frustrating day. We come wanting to come away with the three points. Macclesfield came here with a game plan and did really well and they are fighting for their lives.

"Fortunately we've come away with one point but that's the fighting spirit the manager has instilled into us day in, day out. We don't stop.

"We have been disappointed to give away sloppy goals at the end of games but as a back five we defended well and never really gave away many chances.

"They scored a great goal towards the end of the first half and then it was an uphill battle. We created a lot of chances. We had 13 shots and 7 on target or something. The keeper has had a good day but thankfully one of them has gone in.

"We'll take the point and we'll build on it to go to MK Dons away."

Haringey hammering is big blow to Bognor's promotion hopes

Bognor were given a promotion wake-up call as they crashed to a heavy defeat at home to Haringey Borough.

Joel Nouble netted twice for the visitors to push Rocks out of the play off zone ahead of next week's big home tussle with Worthing.

Bognor welcomed back Keaton Wood to the substitutes' bench as he returned from a long-term ankle injury and Pompey youngster Leon Maloney was back in the side after a new loan deal was struck following the departure of his Blues squad-mate Dan Smith to Cork City.

In a lively opening a diagonal ball over the top towards Joe Tomlinson led to him passing it back to Bradley Lethbridge, but his cross bounced out for a goal kick. Leon Maloney received a ball through the middle but despite being one on one, keeper Valery Pajetat got in the way. Then Jimmy Muitt's turn of pace got Bognor away on the right and he crossed for Harvey Whyte, whose shot forced another decent save from the keeper.

Dan Lincoln gathered a corner from Charley Barker on six minutes.Georgios Aresti chipped a pass to Kudus Oyenuga before he was blocked then Doug Tuck, celebrating his 300th Rocks game, and on this occasion named as skipper, set Muitt through and he found Lethbridge with a square pass, but the chance was snuffed out.

Michael O'Donaghue curled a free-kick goalwards but Chad Field headed it away before David Olufemi's cross whizzed across the box missing everyone. Theo Widdrington's free-kick was headed out for a corner by Lionel Stone. Lincoln had to punch out O'Donaghue's free-kick before Muitt pounced outside the Haringey box but his shot flew wide.

Bring on Brighton - I fancy another cup final

Bognor swap one Pompey youngster for another

Tomlinson was clattered in a late challenge by Barker, who went into the book on 27 minutes. Widdrington was booked when he tackled Aresti near the halfway line a minute later. Lincoln punched away another corner by Barker on 34 minutes as the visitors started to threaten - and on 36 minutes Haringey took the lead when Oyenuga sped through before shooting low into the bottom corner with two Rocks backing off.

Another free-kick into the area by Barker was nodded down by Mark Kirby before the ball fell to Aresti outside the box but he struck wide. O'Donaghue slammed a free-kick into the wall and Oyenuga fired wide from the rebound. A flick by Lethbridge found Muitt on the run but his shot was straight at Pajetat. Calvin Davies did well before cutting inside and shooting high and wide from a tight angle.

HT 0-1

The first chance of the second half came when Widdrington's forward ball was driven to Davies who brought it down before firing wide from the edge of the box.

Haringey went further ahead on 53 minutes as Nouble tapped the ball in at the back post from a low cross. Mason Walsh replaced Davies on 54 minutes, and Bognor had to defend as Oyenuga pounced inside the box. Field was on the floor trying to block when the ball appeared to strike his hand before Oyenuga blasted a deflected shot wide.

Aresti went into the book as he fouled Widdrington. The midfielder took the free-kick from 25 yards but it was easily saved by Pajetat. Richard Gilot replaced Maloney on 63 minutes for the Rocks. Olufemi passed to Aresti but his low strike was pushed away by Lincoln.

Haringey were awarded a penalty on 66 minutes when Field was deemed to have handled a low cross. Nouble slotted the kick into the bottom corner.

Muitt's cross led to a Tomlinson shot that went out off a defender, but the corner was too deep.

Wood made his return, coming on for Harvey Read. It was all Borough as Nouble cut inside on the edge of the box before curling it at goal and forcing Lincoln to push the ball around the post. Muitt clashed with Nouble and looked like he had injured his right leg and had to come off - but the Rocks had ran out of subs so were down to ten men.

Dimitrius Froxylas struck a free-kick wide after Wood had brought down Aresti from 25 yards. The sub went into the book.

Things got worse for Bognor as Gilot gave the ball away in midfield before Nouble sped through and crossed for Karl Akinwande, who tapped in from point-blank range on 89 minutes.

Lethbridge’s left-footed strike was Bognor's last chance but Pajetat was well positioned to save.

This was a poor showing from the Rocks, who now look ahead to the visit of old rivals Worthing in the game some call El Classicoast next Saturday.

Bognor (4-4-2): Lincoln, Davies (Walsh 54), Tomlinson, Tuck, Field, Read (Wood 71), Whyte, Widdrington, Maloney (Gilot 63), Muitt, Lethbridge

Wilson on board as Chichester City Ladies suffer keeper woes

Chichester City Ladies have signed goalkeeper Nina Wilson from FA Women’s Championship Lewes on loan.

The 19-year-old has previously played for Brighton & Hove Albion and has represented Sussex at county level. Wilson will provide cover for Aaron Smith’s side, who have seen both Sadie Blakely and Lauren Dolbear struggle with old injuries.

Chi’s number one Blakely has been sidelined with a recurring knee injury, with Dolbear claiming her spot in this season’s campaign. Now Smith has had to bring in another option as an old injury has started to plague the former Lewes and Queens Park Rangers shot-stopper.

He said: “We have been unlucky this season to lose both of our first-team keepers to old injuries.

“Sadie Blakely has been sidelined for the season which is disappointing as she is one of the best goalkeepers I’ve ever seen, so it was a big blow losing her.

“We managed to find Lauren Dolbear who came in and has to take massive credit for helping us – a truly wonderful person and a top-class goalkeeper who could play at a higher level, however, she also has struggled with an old injury so I’ve had to hunt down another keeper.

“I’ve watched Nina play a number of times and she has always impressed me but since signing her on loan I’ve had the chance to talk to her and the first thing you notice is her warm personality and her professionalism. These are two things I look for in any signing so to find both in such a talented player is rare.

“I’d like to thank Fran and Simon at Lewes for allowing us to sign Nina on loan and I believe that she will be a very valuable addition to our squad.”

Up next for Chichester City this afternoon (Sunday 24) is a trip to play Cardiff City in the FA Women’s National League Southern Premier Division.

The current league leaders will be looking for a repeat of the result between the two sides from October. A Molly Clark bicycle kick was the only goal at Oaklands Park but it was a dominant performance by Chi.

The next home game for Chichester is on Sunday, March 10 against Loughborough Foxes (2pm).

Hinshelwood reflects on 'massive' Worthing win

Adam Hinshelwood heaped praise on Worthing after a ‘massive’ fightback Bostik League Premier Division triumph at Wingate & Finchley

Substitute David Ajiboye marked his return from injury, grabbing a double as the visitors completed a 2-1 turnaround over win The Blues.

But it looked as though Worthing would be unable to follow up the hammering of Harlow Town last time out with a positive result after Irnti Rapai’s opener minutes past the hour mark.

However former Brighton forward Ajiboye, making his first appearance since February 2 having recovered from injury, struck twice in the final 24 minutes to win it for the visitors.

And manager Hinshelwood was understandably delighted as his team moved up two places to fourth - back into the play-off places - and made it successive wins for the first since November.

“We went a goal down, it was one of the worst goals I’ve seen that we gifted to them, and there weren’t many chances in the game,” Hinshelwood said.

“To go a goal down and grind it out, especially against a team that set up well, had a good shape and are well organised, it was massive for us.

“Wingate’s tactics were good and made it difficult for us. We’ll learn more from this win than what we did after a great victory last week.

“When you’ve got to come from behind, keep going, persevere, be clinical and take those chances, which luckily we were able to do.”

Rapai opened the scoring on 63 minutes to give leave Worthing facing a fight to get back in it. Ajiboye was introduced seconds after the goal and pulled the visitors level three minutes later.

It was that man again who struck seven minutes from time to complete the fightback victory.

As well as Ajiboye returning from injury, absentees Joel Colbran and Alfie Young came off the bench for Worthing.

Hinshelwood is delighted with the strength within his squad for the final ten matches. He added: “David (Ajiboye) came on and showed what he was about. We’ve missed those type of finishes and a bit of quality at times throughout the season.

“If we can get him confident, with the rest of the boys we’ve got it bodes well moving forward.

Joel (Colbran) came on and got minutes as did Alfie (Young) and David (Ajiboye) as well.

“There are 20 players that we’ve got, if not more with the young players that we’ve got at the club, all vying for a place."

WORTHING: Perntreou; Edwards, Jones, Crane; Parsons, Clarke, Aguiar, Newton; Poku, Starkey; Pearce. Subs: Colbran (Edwards, 24), Ajiboye (Parsons, 63), Young (Newton, 84), Kealy, Budd.

The Colin Tizzard-trained six-year-old (7/2) was a length-and-a-half winner of the track's richest race of the year - beating past winners Old Guard and Lil Rockerfeller in the process.

Lil Rockerfeller, who won in 2016, looked to be in with a chance, leading on the final circuit but ending third behind 13/8 favourite If The Cap Fits.

The Jeremy Kyle-owned Old Guard, the 2018 winner of the race, was fourth.

Vision Des Flos was immediately made 14/1 by Paddy Power for the Coral Cup at Cheltenham, having been 20/1 before this victory, which kept up a fine National Spirit record for the Scudamore family.

A delighted Tizzard said: "I'll leave him in the Champion Hurdle in case there aren't many left in but I'd think he'll go for the Coral Cup. Two and a half miles is fine for him, he's just been getting outpaced by the likes of Buveur D'Air and Grand Sancy last week. He's had trouble with his wind and he's run three times now in a month so should be fit for Cheltenham."

Winning jockey Scudamore said: "He deserved that as he has been running good races against top horses. he only had 2lb to find with If The Cap Fits and he travelled well today. It's been a good race for the family as I have won it three times now and dad won it twice as well."

Earlier the Josh Gifford Memorial Novices' Chase, was taken by Nico de Boinville on evens favourite Whatswrongwithyou, with the trophy presented by Josh's West Sussex-based trainer son Nick.

The meeting, run in glorious warm spring sunshine in front of a large crowd, opened with the "Guido James Zammit" Handicap Chase going to 11/1 shot Kings Monarch, ridden by Fontwell specialist Jamie Moore for Kerry Lee.

The NetBet Boosts Novices' Hurdle was won by Oliver Sherwood-trained Tarada (9/4) under Leighton Aspell.

Meanwhile Nicholls, while not in luck in the National Spirit Hurdle, did have success in the NetBet Best Odds Guaranteed Handicap Hurdle when Bryony Frost rode Ostuni (4/1) to a comfortabler eight-length victory.

Shantou Flyer, a 10//11 favourite, lived up to his name with a 35-length win in the NetBet Open Hunters' Chase for David Maxwell and trainer Richard Hobson.

'We've got a fantastic player on our hands': Crawley defender on Manchester United loanee Matty Willock

Crawley Town defender Lewis Young believes Matty Willock adds to an attacking line up full of 'real quality' at the club.

A deflected 84th minute strike from Young rescued Reds a home point against struggling Macclesfield Town yesterday afternoon, after some largely ineffective performances from the forwards. Read our match report here

However, full-back Young jumped to their defence, saying the strikers at the club 'do the most work in the week'.

He said: "Over the season our strikers have been brilliant for us. At the start of the season, we were free scoring. Sometimes the ball isn't going to fall for them in the box but I can put my hand on my heart and say the strikers do the most work in the week. I know how hard they work to be successful.

"You've just got to look at the goals they have created or been involved in this season. I've loved playing with them.

"Reece (Grego-Cox) came on today and really made a difference. He has been unfortunate with the games he has played this year. Ollie (Palmer) has been scoring so you can't take him out of there and Dom(inic Poleon) has been brilliant.

"We've got some really good players and it has been tough for the lads waiting for their chance but that just shows how good we are going forward. When you look around the dressing room at the quality we've got and the passion and will to win."

Manchester United forward Matty Willock made his first Crawley start this weekend, after completing his loan move last month, and Young feels he will only improve Reds' quality going forward.

He added: "Matty was at the Arsenal academy with my youngest brother (Kyle Young) so he's played with three of us now (played with Ashley Young at Old Trafford).

"I thought he was brilliant today. He was unfortunate that he started to tire before the end and that's why he was taken off. He really showed his quality.

"If he can keep doing that over the next 11 games, we've got a fantastic player on our hands."

Young was also full of praise for Crawley's 'settled' defence which restricted the visitors to very few chances yesterday, despite the recent departure of regular starter Mark Connolly.

"I was really close with Conns and he's done really well after going up to Scotland," Young said.

"[But] as a back five, we seem quite settled and that's down to the work we've done on the training ground

"We defend together and we score together. We're all a team and we're all frustrated.

"We've not been able to pick up the points we feel we've deserved. We'll take the point and we'll build on it to go to MK Dons away. We've got to keep going and we've got a massive two months now to really start driving up that league."
