The most popular takeaway dish for Horsham residents has been revealed by Deliveroo.

KFC’s boneless banquet is the favourite dish for people in the town, according to the food delivery firm.

A spokeswoman said Kokoro’s chicken katsu curry comes in second, with a jumbo battered sausage from The Master Fryer coming in third.

Bill’s classic burger is the fourth favourite dish and the New Curry Centre’s chicken tikka masala is fifth.

Deliveroo, which is celebrating its third birthday in Horsham, said Friday at 9.03pm is the most popular time for locals to order from the firm.

American food is loved the most, followed by Japanese and British, the spokeswoman added.

Since its launch in the town three years ago, the firm said more than 25 restaurants have signed up to the platform.

Deliveroo has created work for more than 100 people, with the majority of these being the Deliveroo riders, according to the spokeswoman.

A video filmed by a sport journalism student from Bognor - who is also a contributor to the Chichester Observer series - has gone viral.

Well over one million people watched an amazing bit of skill by Pompey's Marcus Harness in just 24 hours after it was caught on camera by third year Solent University student Ben Pett.

Pett, 22, who has recently covered some Rocks games for the Observer and has had work placements with us, said: “I can’t believe the amount of views it’s got. Originally, I thought it may be popular on the Portsmouth account as it’s their player, but all of a sudden it was picked up nationally.”

See the video here
Pett captured the video while doing work experience at Portsmouth Football Club.

“The players were doing a shooting drill next to me,” he explained. “After filming for a few minutes, this specific shot happened and instantly I knew it would be a hit.

“I suggested to the media officer about posting it on to Twitter too and he agreed, the rest is history.”

The video has now received 1.3 million views on the Portsmouth FC Twitter page, another million via Soccer AM and 500,000 on SportBible’s Facebook page.

Course Leader Will Cope said: “We emphasise the importance of getting work experience from day one on our degree, which means our students are learning about the industry and adding to their CVs.

“Not every work placement ends with a viral video so well done to Ben for filming it, spotting the potential and flagging it up to the media officer.”

Pett hopes to go work in the media office of a football club when he graduates from Solent this summer.

The Golds will have to contend with the Hornets' top scorer Chris Smith who has bagged 10 goals in the league so far and will look to carry on his fine form on Tuesday.

Upper Beeding man gives ‘humbling’ Christmas gift to food bank

An Upper Beeding man with Down’s Syndrome has donated hundreds of pounds worth of Christmas fare to a food bank.

Alan Carey’s mother, Roseleen, said the generosity of the act was ‘almost what we expect’ because of his nature.

She added: “It would not be unusual that there would be generosity with him.

“He’s had a lot himself and he’s ready to give it to others.”

Alan saved up all his birthday money to buy £300 worth of festive food to donate.

He gave the food through Sue Plautz, who runs Beeding News, the High Street newsagents.

Sue runs a collection and drops it off weekly at the food bank.

She said: “It’s just amazing. So much thought has gone into it.

“It’s very humbling. He’s even done down to the little point of bread sauce.”

Roseleen said she was not surprised that Alan wanted to help those less fortunate than himself.

She added: “He’s keenly aware of helping.

“He was very much part of what was being bought it made him feel part of the community and very much an adult in the community.”

But Roseleen said she hopes Alan’s generosity will inspire others to also give.

She added: “We would hope that it would encourage other people to act upon these thoughts [of donating to the food bank].

“It might move them. There’s so much need and it’s sad there’s so much need.

“It would encourage other people to follow suit.”

Sue added: “With all the negativity around at the moment it’s so lovely to have some one like that.

“It makes you think what you can do.”

She invited Alan down to the food bank to meet the people who work there.

Sue said she asked Alan to come so he could see where his Christmas collection would be going.

Alan was ‘so excited’ ahead of the visit, she added.

But Sue said her food bank collections have received widespread support from the community.

She added: “It’s just escalated so much.

“I’m going down with a car load every week.

“Everybody is just really supporting it. It’s for local families.”

Supplies for the food bank can be donated at Beeding News in Upper Beeding High Street.

Pagham warm hearts on cold day with second straight win for Hardwell

On a freezing cold afternoon at Nyetimber Lane, Pagham claimed a second consecutive home win in a feisty encounter against Horsham YMCA.

The victory delighted new boss Kerry Hardwell the side maintained their 100 per cent record with him at the helm and moved out of the bottom two in the SCFL premier.

Hardwell said: "I'd like to say how pleased I am with the start and attitudes from all the lads."

The game started evenly with both teams trying hard but producing very little. In fact, the first effort on target by either side resulted in the Lions taking the lead on 30 minutes when Joe Clarke headed home from a pin-point Jamie Carroll cross.

Once again both sides huffed and puffed, producing very little until a curious incident three minutes before half-time.

Pagham thought they had doubled their lead when Tom Chalaye, returned from Worthing FC, slid the ball into the net from inside the penalty area. The celebrations were cut short however as the referee blew his whistle and disallowed the goal, seemingly for offside although the lineman’s flag had not been raised. Unhappy Pagham trooped off at half time convinced they should be two up and photos seemed to prove they were correct.

The second half started with YM well on top but Pagham holding out strongly and trying to get their noses back in front on the break. However, it was the visitors next on the scoresheet in the 70th minute, with a close-range header after a scramble in the Lions area.

Pagham almost grabbed the lead back four minutes later, but Horsham goalie Jeal made a stunning close in save from sub Matt Searle, having dropped the ball to set up the chance in the first place.

But the Lions did regain the lead just a minute later, with Toby Funnell scoring his first for the club, knocking a long cross in at the far post. The game now degenerated into a nasty affair and Clarke was sent off after a 21-man brawl on 77 minutes.

Pagham’s 10 men bravely held out for the last quarter of an hour, but not without several good, and one outstanding save from keeper Tom Crook. Another solid team performance and another much needed three points in the bag.

Pagham: Crook, da Costa, Hallett, Clarke, Geoghegan, Clark, Carroll (Searle), Barnes, Miller (Jenkins), Chalaye (C Tilley), Funnell. Subs: Hands, Heryet.

Chelsy on target as Bognor girls beat Sparrows

Chelsy Osborne scored the only goal as Bognor Regis Town Girls under-13s won a close-fought game against Horsham Sparrows Girls.

Bognor started by creating numerous chances with Amelia Howard, Isabelle Childs and Osborne all going close.

Outstanding defending by Esmae Burgess, Tia Hart and Maddie Rowe kept Horsham at bay. Osborne went close with a great header from a Howard corner but it went past the post.

Great midfield work by Jasmine Shipsides, Nikola Wydra, Osborne and Childs set up chances for Howard but great defending by Horsham stopped Bognor.

Moore came on to provide a little more bite in midfield. On 45 minutes a corner from Howard was floated in and Osborne ghosted in to sidefoot into the roof of the net from six yards.

A great strike from Moore on 60 minutes looked like it was heading for the top corner, but a superb fingertip save prevented it going in.

Bognor were unlucky not to increase their lead again when Osborne, Howard and Childs all went close.

Crawley Town head coach Gabriele Cioffi leaves club by mutual consent

Gabriele Cioffi has today left his position as Crawley Town's head coach by mutual consent.

The club would like to thank Cioffi for his services to Crawley Town and wish him all the best for the future.

Edu Rubio has been appointed interim head coach with immediate effect.

The club will not be making any further comment at this time.

The Italian was named head coach at The People's Pension Stadium in September 2018 after the departure of former boss Harry Kewell to Notts County.

Cioffi lead the Reds to 19th-place in the 2018/19 League Two campaign. The beginning of Cioffi's tenure saw Crawley Town knocked out of the FA Cup after a first round replay home defeat to Southend United.

The Reds also finished bottom of their EFL Trophy group that season, finishing behind Portsmouth, Tottenham Hotspur U21s and Gillingham.

The 2019/20 campaign saw the Reds as high as seventh in League Two. This was in no small part to a six game unbeaten run, three wins and three draws, spanning from August 24 to September 21.

Crawley also embarked on the best Carabao Cup run in the club's history. The Reds won 3-2 at Walsall on August 13 to reach the first round of the competition for the first time in five years.

The Red Devils then produced one of the shocks of the tournament as they defeated Premier League outfit Norwich City 1-0 at The People's Pension Stadium on August 27 to book a place in round three.

And the giant killing wasn't over yet. Crawley hosted Championship side Stoke City on September 24 and, after holding the Potters to a 1-1 draw after 90 minutes, the Reds struck five perfect penalties to beat Stoke 5-3 in the shootout.

But victory over the Potters saw a dramatic downturn in form. Crawley recorded just a solitary league win in nine, sliding down to 19th in the table, and they were dumped out of the Carabao Cup by Colchester United on October 29.

To rub salt in the wound, Colchester's reward for beating the Reds was a trip to heavyweights Manchester United in the quarter-finals.

Cioffi's last game in charge saw the Reds beaten 2-1 at home by League One side Fleetwood Town in the second round of the FA Cup on Sunday.

The Italian won 29 per cent of his games at Crawley before his reign came to an end. Cioffi recorded 21 wins, 15 draws and 36 defeats in 72 games.

‘Wilder Horsham District’ project to help wildlife thrive

The Sussex Wildlife Trust and Horsham District Council have teamed up on a five-year project to help the area’s wildlife thrive.

The council will create a £571,000 green reserve in its 2020/21 budget to pay for the Wilder Horsham District programme, including £30,000 per year to replace trees on council land which were lost to disease.

A report to a meeting of the cabinet said: “The partnership will focus on ensuring that wildlife thrives across Horsham district by creating networks and expanding habitats.

“In doing so, we hope to enhance nature across the district, therefore reversing the declines that have occurred over the

last few decades.”

Members were told the programme had four aims:

To help wildlife thrive;

To create protected networks of land to help habitats expand and species populations to increase;

To increase people’s awareness of the actions they can take to improve the natural environment; and

Making the most of opportunities to tackle climate change and reduce its impact on wildlife.

Leader Ray Dawe said the partnership with the Sussex Wildlife Trust was a ‘tremendous initiative’ while Philip Circus (Con, West Chiltington, Thakeham & Ashington) added: “I’ve got enormous confidence we can take great steps forward working in conjunction with them.”

As well as the new trees, the green reserve will pay the salary and overheads for a full-time landscape advisor, costing £42,000 per year for five years, and a part-time community support post, costing £11,000 per year.

On top of that, there will be £30,000 per year to help parish councils and communities run their own wildlife projects, and a further £6,000 for events in years one and five.

Henri Brocklebank, of the Sussex Wildlife Trust, said: “This is the sort of relationships that conservationists and local authorities should be having and it sets a really good example within the county of how organisations can work together.”

Questions were asked about the amount of money being set aside for tree planting, with suggestions that they could be bought for less.

But members were told the new trees would be mature, which cost more than saplings.

Tricia Youtan (Con, Itchingfield, Slinfold & Warnham) said she was ‘encouraged’ that the plan was to use mature trees given that smaller ones were ‘very often prone to die within the first six months’.

She added: “I actually think it’s money well spent.”

The partnership will also link with Horsham’s Local Plan, highlighting areas where new housing developments could enhance wildlife. Where that was not possible, developers would pay for other sites to be enhanced to form part of a Nature Recovery Network.

Ms Brocklebank told the cabinet: “It’s been a really fantastic experience working with your officers working up what Wilder Horsham District could look like and seeing what the potential is.

“To have a district council that actually wants to be part of nature’s recovery and to do the very best it can in terms of creating an ecological network and looking internally at its own processes and policies, for us that’s an amazing opportunity which is why we’re really, really excited about the potential of this.”

More than 2,000 people waiting for social housing in Crawley

More than 2,000 people are waiting for social housing in Crawley, 123 of whom are homeless.

The figures were shared at a meeting of the borough council’s cabinet, where members looked at a report into the council’s draft Homelessness & Rough Sleeping Strategy 2019-24.

The report said the main reasons people in the town became homeless were when a short-term tenancy in the private rented sector came to an end or when they were evicted by their parents.

While housing developments have delivered more than 800 homes for social housing or intermediate rents in the past five years, that has not been enough to deal with the problem.

Another issue centres around the type of houses available in Crawley. Half have three bedrooms or more, which was what was needed when the new town was developed from the late 1940s onward – but the demand now is for homes for one or two people.

Of the 2,046 households on the housing register at the end of July, 994 needed either studio, one or two-bedroom homes, while 376 needed sheltered or retirement housing.

Tackling the increase in the number of people sleeping rough was one of the five priorities identified in the draft Homelessness & Rough Sleeping Strategy.

The others were: preventing and relieving homelessness, meeting the needs of vulnerable people, accessing suitable and affordable accommodation, and preventing repeat homelessness.

In the private sector, that affordable accommodation is hard to come by.

The report said the average rents were between 19 and 50 per cent higher than the local housing allowance, with up-front costs for tenants averaging £2,500.

People looking for a room in a shared house could pay £2,200 more per year renting privately than those in social housing.

Included in the council’s action plan is the aim of halving the number of rough sleepers in Crawley by March 2022.

Last March there were 40 people sleeping in doorways or on the town’s streets in all weathers.

While the plan was to ‘engage with and assist rough sleepers off the street and into accommodation and/or treatment pathways’, the meeting was told some people were not interested in the help being offered.

The adoption of the draft Homelessness & Rough Sleeping Strategy 2019-24 will be considered at the next meeting of the full council.

“We look forward to continuing to support the charity in every way we can in the future.”

The match raised a total of £1,045 for Ronald McDonald Houses across the UK, including the Brighton House.
